Winsby Leyburn Chairman Nigel Chapman was one of 43 judges selected to participate in the Bristol Law Society’s 11th annual UK Student Mediation Competition, January 25 – 26, 2019. The two day event included lectures and masterclass on the first day, then the competition was staged on the second day, concluding with a presentation dinner in the evening. The event was held at the Business School on the Frenchay campus of the University of the West of England, last year’s winner.
Twenty teams of three university students each conducted mock mediation sessions. They were judged by their process, rather than by the results, providing viewers an excellent opportunity to observe what distinguishes a good mediator from a great one.
This competition drew participants from throughout the UK. There were two winners: UWE University and Glasgow University. The event is part of a worldwide competition which was hosted in Chicago last year. The winners from similar events around the world will participate in the next worldwide competition, to be held in Glasgow in 2020.
